East Keystone, Colorado

History before the completion of the resort in 1970 is little. Most notably, men sought gold in the 1800s. At one point, in the 1880s, East Keystone was a stagecoach route and passage for transporting silver ore to the Montezuma mines. Keystone and Breckenridge, along with a few other towns, are known as "Colorado's Largest Playground". In 1970, Keystone Resort was founded by Max and Edna Dercum. Not only is a mountain named after them, but the town celebrates them every year. Bill and Jane Bergman also joined in the development of Keystone Resort. Keystone is an unincorporated town. As of 2000 Census, there were 825 residents.

Again, as East Keystone is more secluded, you'll have to take your choice of hundreds of shops at three locations: River Run Village, Lakeside Village, and the Mountain House. And if you are interested in restaurants other than The Ski Tip Lodge, ride a gondola from River Run Village to Alpenglow Stube, which Zagat's Survey described as "fabulous old-world food and service and the best setting in the state". It is also the highest AAA four diamond restaurant in North America. With the Keystone Culinary Institute in the vicinity, you know food is taken seriously in Keystone. Over a dozen different cuisines - from fondue to pizza, fresh seafood to hearty steak-tempt everyone after a rigorous day on the slopes. When you see those Rockies climb sky-high, on top a snow blanket and sweet breathless air, you'll feel what the Dercums and Bergmans felt when they created this premier resort town of Keystone. Skiing and snowboarding ranks supreme, but if they are not your cup of tea, other winter activities can be just as fun and exciting for you: snowshoeing, snowmobiling, tubing, sleigh riding, snowbiking, snowcat touring, gondola touring, ice skating, hockey, and fly-fishing. Renting a cottage secluded in East Keystone, Colorado, can be a vacation in itself, a romantic getaway, or a quiet communion with nature. Step outside of East Keystone and all of Keystone's renowned skiing opens up like the vastness of the Rockies.
