History of Keystone, Colorado

The town gets its name from Pennsylvania, the Keystone State. Those who named it came to Colorado in search of gold in the 1800s. While Keystone has little history beyond a resort completed in 1970, the city of Breckenridge thrived much earlier.
Keystone and Breckenridge, along with a few other towns, are known as "Colorado's Largest Playground". In 1970, Keystone Resort was founded by Max and Edna Dercum, who would be honored in 2003 on Founder's Day. A mountain is named after them. Bill and Jane Bergman also joined in the development of Keystone Resort.
Keystone is an unincorporated town. As of 2000 Census, there were 825 residents.
